DART Earthquake Exercise 1990

Return to previous page

DART held its first major all hands earthquake exercise in the spring of 1990. Preparation for the exercise was extensive. It required digging a 12-foot deep 60-foot long trench. Because of the high water table, the trench would end up with two feet of water during high tide. The trench was filled with debris including a refrigerator and tons of concrete. Because of the unstable trench walls, the exercise had significant actual hazards that had to be dealt with. The evolution lasted well over 12-hours.
